Terra Nova had two students represent our school at this year's Conversation Crew Celebration! This hands on project is part of a partnership with Conservation Minnesota. 219 Rainbow trout were released today in Stillwater at Brown's Creek! The Trout in the Classroom (TIC) group traversed the muddy bank to bring the trout to their new home. Big thanks to Justin, an alumnus of ours, came with to help as a veteran TIC participant and assisted with the release. We then went over to the St Croix River and attempted some midday fishing along the lift bridge. The TIC program is a partnership between the MN DNR, Trout Unlimited and schools across the state. Terra Nova Students got an up close and personal experience with our role in the water cycle on Friday. In the morning, students toured the St. Cloud Technical & Community College Water Testing Lab. Students conducted a hands-on experiment that helped us learn about the very high standards our drinking water must meet. STTCC is currently the only school in the state that offers this program.
In the afternoon, we visited the Buffalo Wastewater Treatment Plant. Students were able to experience first hand what happens to our domestic wastewater. We learned that it is an important and scientific process that reclaims our wastewater and makes it safe before returning it to natural surface waters. We also learned how we can be better stewards of our wastewater in our own homes. The City of Buffalo also delivered tote bags that included LED light bulbs, low-flow showerheads and faucet adapters, and an energy-efficient power strip so that we can lower our energy and water consumption.
